Herm Sprenger Ultra-Plus Pinch Dog Training Collar

You came home with a box that smelled like metal and German engineering. I was suspicious immediately. Still am, but for different reasons now.

Dad

Okay, I bought this. You were there when I opened the box. What did you think?

Boldo

Cold. Sharp. Nothing soft about it. You pulled it out and I did not want it anywhere near my neck, which you noticed. I've calmed down about that part. The metal prongs are smaller than I expected, so it's not as medieval as it looks.

Dad

Let's talk about the smell. I know that's your main thing.

Boldo

German stainless steel. Very clean. No dog smell on it at all, which is boring but honest. After a week around my neck it picked up some of my scent, which made it tolerable. Still smells like a factory though. Not like the leather collar, which actually had character.

Dad

You've had some time with it now. Is it any good?

Boldo

It works. You barely have to use it. Just the weight and the slight pressure remind me you're there. The chain is smooth, doesn't pinch my skin like cheap ones do. I respect that. Also, did you see the cat knock over the treat jar? We should talk about that instead.

Dad

I paid sixty dollars for this. Be honest. Worth it?

Boldo

Yes. I hate admitting that. You could get a cheaper pinch collar and it would probably snap in two months. This one feels like it'll outlive both of us. The adjustment is precise. The clasp doesn't dig. You get what you paid for, even if sixty dollars is stupid money.

Dad

Final answer. Would you recommend this to other dogs?

Boldo

If their owners are serious about training and not just looking for a quick fix, sure. This isn't for dogs whose owners think a collar does the work. It's for dogs whose owners actually understand what they're doing. You happen to be one of those people, which is annoying for me but good for everyone else.

4 out of 5 poos. I didn't want to like this. Turns out it's actually well-made.
